When Washington was 6 years old he got an ax as a gift. Then Washington cut his fathers Cherry tree with his new ax. When his father saw what happened to his Cherry tree, he asked George about it. George said, "I can not tell a lie I did cut the Cherry tree with my ax". This Story helps people see how honest George Washington was when he did something. That is why people could trust him to become the first president of the United States. The story was written and made up by Mason Locke Weems in 1809.
